A hook is the opening of a piece of content: the first line of a caption, the headline on the first carousel slide or the first one to three seconds of a video. Its only job is to stop the scroll and create enough curiosity or relevance that the person keeps going.
For a small business, the hook often decides whether the rest of the content is seen at all. On recommendation feeds, people decide in a moment, and early drop-off tells the algorithm the post is not worth showing further. Strong hooks name a specific problem, promise a clear benefit, show a surprising result first or ask a question the viewer recognises.
Example: instead of opening a video with “Hi, I’m Kate from Kate’s Cleaning”, a cleaning company starts with a split screen of a greasy oven and the same oven sparkling: “This took 12 minutes and no harsh chemicals.”
AI SMM’s AI content studio can write several opening lines for one idea, and its AI review checks a post before it goes out.
