Followers are people who chose to subscribe to your account. Depending on the network, they may be called subscribers (YouTube, Telegram channels), members (groups, Discord servers) or connections (LinkedIn). Following usually means your posts may appear in their feed, but on algorithmic networks only a share of followers sees each post.
For a small business, follower count is social proof and a rough measure of potential reach, but it is not a goal on its own. A thousand local, interested followers are worth more than ten thousand random ones. Bought followers or giveaway “prize hunters” inflate the number and lower engagement rate, which can hurt reach.
Example: a neighbourhood bakery has 1,800 followers, most of them within a few kilometres. Every Friday post about fresh sourdough sells out the morning batch, which a national food blog with 50,000 followers could never do for them.
