Vanity metrics

Vanity metrics are numbers that look impressive, like follower count or likes, but say little about business results on their own.

Vanity metrics are indicators that are easy to grow and nice to show off, but do not tell you whether the business is getting better: total followers, likes, video views, page views. They are not useless, but they are misleading when treated as goals. The opposite is actionable metrics tied to decisions and money: leads, cost per lead, conversion rate, repeat purchases, revenue.

For a small business, chasing vanity metrics is a common trap. Giveaways that attract prize hunters, bought followers or viral videos off-topic for your audience can inflate the numbers while sales stay flat. A good test for any metric: “If this number doubles, what will I do differently, and will we earn more?”

Example: a beauty salon’s giveaway brings 2,000 new followers in a week. A month later, bookings have not changed and engagement rate has dropped, because most new followers only wanted the prize.

AI SMM analytics adds an AI hint on each tab about what changed and what to try, helping you focus on actions rather than on the size of the numbers.
