Engagement rate (ER)

Engagement rate is the share of people who interacted with your content, usually engagements divided by followers or by reach.

Engagement rate (ER) turns engagement into a percentage so you can compare posts and accounts of different sizes. The two most common formulas: engagements ÷ followers × 100% (ER by followers) and engagements ÷ reach × 100% (ER by reach). The second one is often more honest, because it counts only people who actually saw the post.

For a small business, ER is a better health check than follower count. A small account with an engaged audience often sells more than a large account with silent followers. What counts as “good” ER varies widely by network, niche and account size, so compare yourself with your own past results and with direct competitors rather than with universal benchmarks.

Example: a post reached 2,000 people and got 80 likes, 15 comments, 10 shares and 25 saves: 130 engagements. ER by reach is 130 ÷ 2,000 × 100% = 6.5%.
