What it is
World Emoji Day is a playful online holiday celebrated on 17 July. The date is usually explained by the calendar emoji, which shows 17 July on most platforms, and the day has been marked on social media for several years.
It is one of the easiest days for any brand: no one needs a reason to use emoji, and the format invites quick, low-effort interaction such as quizzes, guess-the-product games and emoji-only replies.
Symbols: A smiling face, a calendar page showing 17, a keyboard, a thumbs up, a speech bubble
Emoji: 😀 🎉 📅 💬 🔥 ❤️
Colours: Sunny yellow, soft orange, white
Hashtags: #WorldEmojiDay #EmojiDay #EmojiQuiz #SocialMedia #BrandVoice
What to aim for
- Get a high number of quick comments and replies with a one-tap format
- Show the brand’s personality and sense of humour
- Teach the audience a game they can play every week, such as a weekly emoji quiz
Post ideas by format
Post
- “Describe our product in three emoji” with your own example, then ask followers to do the same
- A guess-the-item post: a row of emoji that hints at a dish, a service or a product, with the answer in the first comment
Carousel
- “Guess the product by the emoji”: one slide per puzzle and the answer on the next slide
- “Emoji we use in business messages and what they really say”: five slides with short, light explanations
Reel / short video
- Hook: “Reply to this video only with emoji.” Show a series of emoji questions and answer them with gestures
- A 15-second “our workday in emoji” with each emoji matching one real moment

- An emoji slider: “How’s your mood today?” with an emoji on the slider

Happy World Emoji Day! Guess which dish we are hiding behind these emoji: 🥑🍳🍞🌶️. Write your answer in the comments, and tomorrow we will announce who guessed it first. The right answer is ready on our menu, so you can try it in person. Bonus point if you answer using only emoji.
World Emoji Day made us count the emoji our team uses at work. The most common one is the thumbs up, and it means three different things depending on the person: agreed, noted, and I read it. Which emoji do you use in work chats, and what does it really mean? Let’s build a short translation guide in the comments.
Today is World Emoji Day, so here is our bestseller in three emoji. Guess what it is before the end of the video. Comment your answer using only emoji. We will pick the funniest reply and feature it in a video tomorrow. No spoilers in the comments, let others guess first.
Meme and trend formats that fit
- Reply with only emoji. Ask a question and allow only emoji as the answer. It is a one-tap format that raises comment numbers without effort for the audience.
- Emoji translation. Show a serious business sentence and its version in emoji, or the other way round. Keep it clear, so the joke reads in two seconds.
What to avoid
- Do not overload the picture so that the text becomes unreadable; the format should be light and clear
- Avoid emoji that may be read as rude or double-meaning, especially for a wide audience
- Do not use emoji in place of the information about your offer; the post still needs one clear next step
When to post
- Prepare three to five emoji puzzles a few days ahead and test that they are not too hard
- Publish in the morning of 17 July and share the answers in the evening Stories
- The day after, announce the winner and, if the format worked, turn it into a weekly quiz
What to check afterwards
- Comments and replies: this is a conversation day
- Shares of the quiz and number of correct answers
- Story replies and sticker taps
