A shadowban is an informal term for a situation where a network restricts how widely an account’s content is shown, for example by hiding it from recommendations, hashtag pages or search, without a clear notification. Networks rarely use the word themselves, but several now show recommendation eligibility or account status in their settings.
For a small business, a sudden, lasting drop in reach from non-followers can be a sign of restrictions, but more often it has ordinary causes: weaker content, a seasonal dip or an algorithm update. Common reasons for real restrictions include violating community guidelines, using banned or spammy hashtags, reposting others’ content with watermarks, buying followers or engagement, and aggressive automation.
Example: a fitness studio’s reach from hashtags drops to almost zero. Checking the account status shows a warning for a reposted video with copyrighted music. After deleting it and posting original content for a few weeks, reach recovers.
Prevention: follow each network’s rules, avoid shortcuts such as bought followers, and keep any automation within the network’s limits and with human approval.
