Share of voice (SOV)

Share of voice is your brand's share of all conversations, mentions or ad visibility in your market compared with competitors.

Share of voice (SOV) shows how much of the conversation in your market is about you rather than your competitors. On social media, it is usually calculated as your mentions (or reach, or engagement) ÷ the total for you and your competitors × 100%. In advertising, it can also mean your share of all ad impressions in a category.

For a small business, SOV is a way to measure brand awareness relative to the competition, not in a vacuum. Growing from 10% to 20% of local conversations about, say, coffee shops in your district means more people think of you first. Define the competitor set and the time period clearly, or the number means little.

Example: a dental clinic compares itself with three other clinics in its town. Over a quarter, it counts public mentions, reviews and engagement on posts. Its share grows from 15% to 25% after it starts publishing weekly patient-education videos.

AI SMM analytics lets you add competitor accounts and compare growth and activity with yours, which gives a practical view of your share of attention on social media.
