UTM parameters are short tags added to the end of a URL, such as ?utm_source=instagram&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=spring_sale. When someone clicks the link, web analytics tools read the tags and record the source, channel and campaign of the visit. The five standard tags are source, medium, campaign, content and term.
For a small business, UTM tags are the simplest way to see which social posts, bios, stories, emails and influencer collaborations actually bring visitors and orders to your website. Without them, much social traffic is reported vaguely or lumped together. The main rule is consistency: agree on lowercase names and a fixed list of sources.
Example: a flower shop uses different UTM tags for its Instagram bio, Telegram channel and a local blogger’s story. A month later its analytics show the blogger brought the fewest visits but the highest share of orders.
Tip: use UTM tags on the link-in-bio page’s buttons too. AI SMM’s link in bio page gathers all your links in one place, so tagging each button shows which link leads to sales.
