What it is
International Literacy Day is observed on 8 September. It was proclaimed by UNESCO in the 1960s to remind the world that reading and writing are basic human rights and a foundation for education and development.
For schools, courses, publishers and bookshops it is a natural moment to talk about reading, grammar and learning in a friendly, useful way.

On International Literacy Day, a small test: which of these three phrases contains a mistake? Look carefully before checking the answer in the next slide. Most of us make at least one of these errors in daily writing. Tell us in the comments how many you spotted. If you would like to practise more, we are offering a free trial lesson this week.
Reading begins with a book in a child’s hands. On International Literacy Day we are starting a collection for a local school library. You can bring a book you no longer need or choose a new one at our shop and leave it in the box at the counter. We will deliver everything and post a thank-you report. Thank you for helping!
How to help a child love reading? Read together for ten minutes before bed, let the child choose a book and talk about the story afterwards. Do not push, make reading a pleasant time. Today, on Literacy Day, try one habit and share how it went. If you want a reading list for your child’s age, write to us in the chat.
Meme and trend formats that fit
- Expectation vs reality. Two panels: the huge reading list you promised yourself and the one page you actually read. Self-ironic and aimed at adults, not at children.
- Grammar nerd. A short clip or image about the joy of spotting a typo on a menu or sign. Keep it kind: laugh at the situation, never at a person’s mistake.
What to avoid
- Do not mock people’s mistakes or low literacy; the day is about access to education
- Do not publish a quiz with answers you have not double-checked
- Do not exploit the day only to push course sales; give a useful tip first
When to post
- Prepare the quiz and carousel a week ahead and check every example for correctness
- Publish on 8 September; in 2027 it falls on a Wednesday
- The day after, publish the quiz answers and thank participants
What to check afterwards
- Comments with quiz answers and participation rate
- Saves of the mistakes and reading-habits carousels
- Sign-ups for trial lessons or book orders
