What it is
International Talk Like a Pirate Day is a parody holiday observed on 19 September. It is usually credited to two Americans who started it in the 1990s as a joke, and it spread through the internet and the media; on this day people speak in a playful pirate style with “Ahoy!” and “Arrr!”.
It is a pure fun day, so businesses that appeal to families, kids and casual audiences can play along with costumes, treasure hunts and humour.

Ahoy, mateys! Today is Talk Like a Pirate Day, and our captain declares that anyone who orders in pirate speak gets a free cookie from the treasure chest. Say “Arrr, one flat white, please” at the counter and show us your best pirate voice. Landlubbers are welcome too, we will not make them walk the plank. See you at the bar!
Is your child dreaming of an adventure? On Talk Like a Pirate Day we present our pirate party: a treasure hunt, pirate costumes, games with a map and a small prize for every young sailor. Our animators take care of everything while parents relax. Write to us in the comments or in messages for the dates and details.
Ahoy, little pirates! Today we hide a treasure in our shop and give a hint in this video: look near the shelf with puzzles and board games. Come and find it with your family, and the first sailor to discover it gets a small surprise from the captain. Share this video with your crew and tell us which pirate toy you would choose.
Meme and trend formats that fit
- Pirate translation. Take an everyday sentence from your business, such as “your order is ready”, and show it in pirate speak next to the normal version. Playful and easy to share.
- Expectation vs reality. Two panels: the fearsome captain you dressed up as and the real person in a paper hat. Self-ironic and kid-friendly.
What to avoid
- Do not use scary violence or real piracy as a joke; keep it cartoonish and kid-friendly
- Do not promise a prize or a free item without clear conditions and how many are available
- Do not overdo pirate speech in important information such as prices and hours; keep those plain
When to post
- Prepare costumes, props and the hunt route a week ahead
- Publish the playful post on the morning of 19 September; in 2027 it falls on a Sunday, which suits family and kids’ events
- The day after, share photos and thank everyone who joined the crew
What to check afterwards
- Shares and comments, since fun posts spread by being passed to friends
- Visits and bookings for the themed event or party
- Photos tagged by guests
