What it is

National Pet Day is observed in the United States on 11 April. It is usually credited to an animal-welfare advocate who wanted a day to celebrate pets and to encourage adopting animals from shelters. It is an awareness day, not an official public holiday.

On social media it is mostly a day of pet photos, which makes it a natural fit for pet shops, vets, groomers and shelters.

Symbols: Paw prints, a leash, a bowl, a favourite toy, a sleeping pet

Pet of the day

It is National Pet Day, and our feed belongs to your best friends. Send us a photo of your pet, add their name and one strange habit, and we will share our favourites in stories all day. Whether it is a dog who hides the socks or a cat who owns the sofa, we want to meet them.

A simple check-up reminder

On National Pet Day we have one gentle reminder: a regular check-up helps your pet stay healthy for longer. If you have not visited a vet in a while, this is a good week to book. Our team will be happy to talk through vaccinations and care routines. Message us and we will find a convenient time.

Meet someone who needs a home

Today is National Pet Day, so meet Biscuit, a very patient dog who is still waiting for a family. He loves long walks and hates thunder. If you are thinking about adopting, come and walk with him this weekend. Share this video: someone you know may be looking for exactly this kind of friend.

Meme and trend formats that fit

  • Expectation vs reality. Two panels: the elegant pet photo you plan and the real shot with a blurry tail or a turned-away head. Pet owners will recognise it instantly.
  • Pet translated. A pet photo with a made-up inner monologue in captions, in the style of a subtitle. Keep it light and about the animal’s quirks.

What to avoid

  • Do not encourage impulse buying of animals as gifts; for shelter posts, stress that adoption is a long commitment
  • Do not use photos of pets you do not have rights to; always ask owners
  • Do not give medical advice about specific animals in comments; recommend seeing a vet

When to post

  • A week ahead, ask customers to send pet photos in advance and get their permission
  • Publish early on 11 April (a Sunday in 2027); weekends have strong pet-content engagement
  • On Monday, thank participants and share the winner of any contest

What to check afterwards

  • Shares, comments and tags, which show the community reaction
  • For shelters: enquiries about the featured animals and visits
  • For shops and clinics: bookings or orders linked to the post
