What it is
Russian Cinema Day is a professional holiday of film-makers observed on 27 August. The date is usually linked to a 1919 decree on the nationalisation of the film industry in Soviet Russia, and the day is marked with screenings, festivals and thanks to people who work in cinema.
For businesses it is a light cultural hook: educational projects, cafés and shops can recommend films, run quizzes and invite people to watch together.

Today is Russian Cinema Day, and we have a small gift for learners: a list of five films with clear speech and everyday dialogues that are good for listening practice. Watch with subtitles, note three new phrases and share them with us in the comments. Which film would you add? We are collecting your suggestions for a longer list.
To mark Russian Cinema Day we are planning a movie evening: a film on the screen, popcorn and hot drinks on the table. Vote below for the genre, comedy, drama or classic, and we will pick the title by the results. Reply here if you want us to save you a table. Bring friends, there will be room for everyone.
On Russian Cinema Day, a thought from our team: a film is a lesson in teamwork. A director, an operator, a sound engineer and an editor work to a single idea, each in their own role. In our courses we use the same logic for group projects. Which film changed how you look at your work? Share your pick in the comments.
Meme and trend formats that fit
- Expectation vs reality. Two panels: the movie night you imagine, with a cosy blanket and snacks, and the real one where you scroll for 40 minutes choosing a film. Kind and self-ironic.
- Guess the film. A frame, an emoji line or a quote from a well-known film, and followers guess the title in comments. Use only short, well-known lines and do not post frames you do not have the rights to.
What to avoid
- Do not post film frames, posters or clips that you do not have the right to use; use your own recreations or text lists
- Do not criticise specific actors or directors in a way that looks like an attack
- Do not give away tickets without clear rules and a stated deadline
When to post
- Choose the films and prepare the quiz a week ahead and check the giveaway terms with the venue
- Publish on 27 August, ideally in the afternoon so people can plan the evening; in 2027 it falls on a Friday
- The day after, publish the quiz answers and giveaway winners
What to check afterwards
- Comments with film suggestions and quiz answers
- Saves of the film list, a sign that people will return to it
- Reservations or visits for the movie evening, if you hold one
