A marketing funnel (sales funnel) is a model of how people move from strangers to customers. A common version has three stages: awareness (they see you for the first time), consideration (they follow, read, ask questions, compare) and decision (they buy or book). Each stage loses some people, so the shape narrows like a funnel.
For a small business, thinking in funnel stages helps give each piece of content a job. Short videos and collaborations bring awareness; useful posts, reviews and lead magnets build consideration; clear offers, fast replies and easy booking close the decision. Measuring where most people drop off shows what to fix first.
Example: a fitness coach gets 5,000 views on Reels (awareness), 200 people download her free workout plan (consideration), 30 book a trial session and 10 buy a monthly package (decision). The biggest drop is between plan and trial, so she adds a follow-up message with a trial offer.
In AI SMM, the middle and bottom of the funnel can run inside messengers with chat flows: lead magnet, qualification, offer and follow-up.
