What it is

Dry January is a month-long challenge in which people choose not to drink alcohol for the whole of January. It became widely known in the UK, where it is usually linked to a public health charity campaign, and it has since spread to other countries.

People join for different reasons: to rest after the holidays, to save money, to sleep better or just to see how they feel. For businesses it opens a space for mocktails, wellness routines, sport and habit-building content.

Symbols: A mocktail with fresh herbs, a sparkling water with citrus, a habit tracker, sports shoes, a good night’s sleep

Emoji: 🥤 🍋 🏃 💪 😴 🌿 📆

Colours: Fresh green, citrus yellow, clear white

Hashtags: #DryJanuary #Mocktail #AlcoholFree #HealthyHabits #NewYearReset

What to aim for

  • Attract health-minded customers with an alcohol-free menu or wellness programme
  • Build a community around a 31-day challenge and keep it engaged all month
  • Turn a quiet January into a steady content series for a café, gym or health expert

Post ideas by format

Mocktail of the week

Doing Dry January? We have you covered. This week’s mocktail is fresh mint, lime, sparkling water and a little honey syrup. No alcohol, no boring juice, just a proper drink in a nice glass. Every week we will add a new one, and you can vote for the next flavour in the stories. Tell us in the comments who you are joining this month.

31 days, one habit at a time

Dry January is a good time to build small habits that last longer than a month. Our coaches will post one simple task every week: a longer walk, an earlier bedtime, a glass of water before coffee. Join the group, tick the days in the tracker and share how you feel. There is no pressure and no perfect result, just a good start to the year.

A month to reset habits

Many of my clients tell me they use January to reset after the holidays, and some choose Dry January. If you decide to try it, plan the evenings that are usually the hardest, prepare a replacement drink and tell a friend. This is general information, not medical advice; if you drink regularly or have concerns, speak to your doctor first. What helped you build a new habit?

Meme and trend formats that fit

  • Expectation vs reality. Left: “I will drink only water all January”. Right: a table full of increasingly creative mocktails. The joke is that the challenge gets fun, not that people struggle.
  • Day counter. A day counter overlay with a funny status for each stage, like “Day 3: discovered ginger beer”. Keep the humour about the drinks, not about people who drink.

What to avoid

  • Do not shame people who drink or who stop and start; the tone should be an invitation, not a lecture
  • Do not make health claims or promise results from not drinking; speak from experience or refer to a specialist
  • Do not treat the topic as a joke if followers write about serious dependency; respond kindly and point to professional help

When to post

  • Prepare the menu, recipes and stories in the week before the new year
  • Launch on 1 January and publish once a week with a new drink, tip or tracker update
  • At the end of January, publish a thank-you post and keep the best drinks on the menu

What to check afterwards

  • Weekly saves of recipes and tips
  • Sales of the alcohol-free drinks or sign-ups to the challenge group
  • Replies to tracker stickers and polls, which show how engaged the challenge community is
