What it is

World Autism Awareness Day is observed on 2 April and was established by the United Nations to promote understanding and inclusion of autistic people. It is usually marked with awareness campaigns, and many organisations use blue lighting or ribbons in some countries.

For businesses the day is not a marketing hook but a chance to show practical inclusion: calmer spaces, clear communication and respect for how people experience the world.

Symbols: Many organisations use a blue colour or a puzzle piece, though some autistic people prefer other symbols such as the rainbow infinity sign

Emoji: 💙 🧩 🌈 ♾️ 🤝 🫶

Colours: Soft blue, white, warm grey

Hashtags: #WorldAutismAwarenessDay #Inclusion #Neurodiversity #AutismAcceptance #SensoryFriendly

What to aim for

  • Show real, practical steps your space or service takes for inclusion
  • Build trust with families and professionals through accurate, respectful information
  • Share the voices of experts and autistic people instead of speaking for them

Post ideas by format

Post

  • A plain description of what you changed to make your space calmer, such as quiet hours or lower music, with no claims beyond that
  • A short thank-you and link to a local inclusive organisation you work with, with their permission

Carousel

  • “Myths and facts” prepared with a qualified specialist, one myth per slide with a short, careful answer
  • “How we prepare a visit”: step-by-step slides for what a family can expect, from entry to the end of the visit

Reel / short video

  • A calm walk-through of your quiet-hours setup, with captions and no dramatic music
  • A short interview with a specialist or a parent, only with their consent and approval of the final cut

Stories

  • A Q&A box for a specialist to answer questions from parents
  • A story with your quiet-hour times and how to book or ask for adjustments

Quiet hours at our centre

On World Autism Awareness Day we want to share something practical. Twice a week we run quiet sessions with softer light, lower sound and fewer children, so families who need a calmer space can come when it suits them. We are always learning, so tell us what would help you feel more welcome here. We read every message.

Myths and facts with our specialist

Today, 2 April, is World Autism Awareness Day. We asked our child psychologist to answer the questions parents ask most often and to clear up common myths. The answers are in the post below. If you have a question for her, leave it in the comments and she will reply in a follow-up. Please be kind and respectful in the discussion.

Inclusion is a daily practice

World Autism Awareness Day reminds us that inclusion happens in small, repeatable steps: clear schedules, calm spaces, and teachers who listen to families. In our school we are still learning, and we welcome advice from specialists and parents. What changes have worked in your classroom or workplace? We would value your experience.

What to avoid

  • No jokes, memes or trends: autism is not a punchline and humour easily comes across as mockery
  • Do not use autistic people or children as props, and do not post their photos without clear consent; do not speak for them, invite specialists and autistic voices instead
  • Do not use the day for discounts or sales, and do not make medical claims or promise that your service helps or cures; stick to what you actually do

When to post

  • Start preparing at least two weeks ahead so a specialist can check every text
  • Publish on the morning of 2 April (a Friday in 2027) in a calm tone and answer comments personally
  • Keep the changes you announced in place afterwards; inclusion matters more than a single post

What to check afterwards

  • Saves and shares of the informational posts, a sign they were useful
  • Quality of the comments and questions from families, and whether you can answer them
  • Requests for adjusted visits or quiet hours, if you offer them
