What it is
World Theatre Day is observed on 27 March and was created by the International Theatre Institute, a body linked to UNESCO. Each year a well-known theatre artist is invited to write an international message, which is read in theatres around the world.
It is a warm cultural day for theatres and their neighbours: cafés, restaurants, shops and schools can join with small ideas such as a pre-show dinner, a mini sketch or a ticket giveaway.
Symbols: A stage curtain, comedy and tragedy masks, a spotlight, a ticket, a bouquet for the actors

What to aim for
- Footfall: a pre- or post-theatre offer for cafés and restaurants near a theatre
- Engagement: a playful sketch or prompt that followers want to act or answer
- Community: celebrate local theatres and share their upcoming shows
Post ideas by format
Post
- “Dinner before the show”: your menu for theatre-goers, with a time that fits an evening performance
- A thank-you to a local theatre with a real photo and a link to its upcoming shows, with its agreement
Carousel
- “A night at the theatre, step by step”: one slide each for dinner, tickets, interval and after-show chat
- “Five theatre words explained”: one term per slide, such as backstage or interval
Reel / short video
- Hook: “A sketch about our service.” A 20-second mini play with a funny twist and a dramatic bow
- A behind-the-scenes look at preparing for an evening full of theatre-goers
Stories
- A poll: “Comedy, drama or musical tonight?”
- A question sticker: “What was the best show you ever saw?” and reshare answers

World Theatre Day is the perfect excuse for an evening out. We are a few steps from the theatre, and we have set aside tables for a quick dinner before the show. Come in an hour early, tell the team which performance you are seeing, and we will serve you in time for the first bell. Tell us in the comments your favourite play.
A tiny drama in three acts: the client asks a question, the manager panics, the solution appears just before the curtain. We filmed it for World Theatre Day with our team in the leading roles. Which role would you play, the hero, the villain or the person who always hands out the props? Tell us in the comments and join the sketch.
To mark World Theatre Day we are giving away two tickets to a show in our city, in agreement with the theatre. To enter, reply with the title of a play that you love and a line about why. We will pick one winner tomorrow evening and announce it here. Press the menu button to see the rules and the date of the performance.
Meme and trend formats that fit
- Drama mask reactions. Use the comedy and tragedy masks as a two-panel format: “what I planned” versus “what happened at work”. Keep it about the situation, not a person.
- Behind the curtain. Contrast the polished front of your business with the funny chaos backstage, in a light, friendly tone.
What to avoid
- Do not use a theatre’s logo or photos of its productions without permission
- Do not offer tickets you do not hold or have not agreed with the theatre
- Do not make fun of actors or a particular play; keep the tone warm
When to post
- Agree on any ticket giveaway with a theatre at least two weeks ahead
- Publish the main post in the morning of 27 March; in 2027 the date is a Saturday, so an evening offer fits
- The day after, announce the winner and share photos of guests, with permission
What to check afterwards
- Bookings or orders linked to the pre-theatre offer
- Entries to the giveaway and replies about favourite plays
- Views and shares of the mini sketch
