What it is

International Mother Language Day is observed on 21 February and was proclaimed by UNESCO to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingual education. The date is usually linked to the Language Movement in Bangladesh.

For businesses it is a warm, inclusive hook: you can greet your customers in their own languages, share words that are hard to translate and talk about how you work with multilingual audiences.

Symbols: Alphabets from different languages, a dictionary, a speech bubble with “hello”, a world map, a children’s book

Emoji: 🗣️ 🌍 📖 ✍️ 💬 🧒

Colours: Deep blue, green, warm yellow

Hashtags: #MotherLanguageDay #InternationalMotherLanguageDay #Multilingual #LanguageMatters #LearnLanguages

What to aim for

  • Show respect for your audience and its languages, which builds trust
  • Earn comments and shares with an easy “say it in your language” question
  • Promote language courses, translation or multilingual services

Post ideas by format

Post

  • “Thank you” in all the languages your team speaks, with the names of the team members next to each
  • A word from your own niche or region that is hard to translate, and what it really means

Carousel

  • “Hello in 8 languages”: one slide per greeting with pronunciation and a small fact
  • “5 tips for raising a bilingual child”: one slide per tip, ideally reviewed by a teacher or specialist

Reel / short video

  • Hook: “How do you say ‘thank you’ in your mother tongue?” Team members answer one by one in 15 seconds
  • A guessing game: a word in a less common language appears on screen, the team guesses the meaning

Stories

  • A question box: “Teach us a word in your language”
  • A quiz: “Which language is this greeting from?” with three options

Say hello in your language

Today is International Mother Language Day. In our classes, students come from many countries, and every greeting sounds different. Write “hello” in your mother tongue in the comments, and we will collect the answers in a Story. Our teachers will try to say the three most unusual ones. Which language do you speak at home?

A language that lives at home

For International Mother Language Day we asked our teachers how to keep a home language alive for children. Their ideas: read a bedtime story in it, sing songs, and let the child teach you new words. Even ten minutes a day matters. What helps your family keep your language? Please share your tips for other parents.

A word with no translation

Happy Mother Language Day! Here is today’s game: write one word from your native language that is hard to translate and explain what it means. We will collect the best ones in a post on Monday. If you are learning a new language, ask us about our courses, and we will help you choose a level that suits you.

Meme and trend formats that fit

  • Lost in translation. A two-panel format with a literal translation of a phrase and what it really means. Choose a harmless phrase and make sure the translation is correct.
  • Language-learner timeline. A text-on-photo set showing the stages: first day, third week, first conversation. Use gentle humour about learning, not about accents or peoples.

What to avoid

  • Do not make fun of accents, dialects or minority languages
  • Do not use a language on your graphics unless you are sure the words and alphabet are right; ask a native speaker to check
  • Do not mix up “country” and “language”: many languages are spoken in several countries

When to post

  • Collect translations and greetings from your team a week ahead and check them with native speakers
  • Publish on the morning of 21 February (a Sunday in 2027) and invite replies in different languages
  • The next day, share the most interesting words and thank everyone who joined

What to check afterwards

  • Comments in different languages and the number of new words collected
  • Shares of the greeting carousel
  • Enquiries about courses or translation after the post
