What it is

National Handwriting Day is observed on 23 January in the United States, the birthday of John Hancock, whose bold signature on the Declaration of Independence became famous. It is usually linked to the writing-instrument industry, which proposed the day to encourage people to write by hand.

Today it is a gentle day for stationery brands, gift shops, teachers and anyone who sells something personal: a note, a card, a label or a signature.

What to aim for

  • Add a personal touch to orders and build customer loyalty
  • Collect user content with photos of followers’ handwriting
  • Show craftsmanship and brand personality

Post ideas by format

Post

  • A photo of the team’s handwritten notes for customers, with a line on why you write them by hand
  • “Show us your handwriting”: a prompt to write one sentence about the brand and share a photo

Carousel

  • “5 ways handwriting helps you think”: one slide per idea with a handwritten title, keeping the claims general and non-scientific
  • A tutorial on writing a thank-you note: structure, three opening lines, three closing lines

Reel / short video

  • Hook: “Watch this signature come to life.” A close-up of the pen writing the logo or a name in calligraphy
  • Packing an order with a handwritten card, shown in 20 seconds from the first line to the sealed box

Stories

  • A poll: “Do you still write by hand? Daily, sometimes, only signatures”
  • A challenge: followers send a photo of their handwriting and you guess their personality in a light, kind way

A note in every parcel

Behind every order there is a pen: our team writes a short thank-you note by hand and slips it into your parcel. It takes a few extra minutes, but we think a real signature makes a package feel like a gift. Today is Handwriting Day, so we are sharing a few of our favourite notes. Tell us in the comments what you would like us to write to you.

Why we still write by hand

In our classes, students keep a paper notebook alongside their laptops. Writing by hand slows people down just enough to choose the important points, and many of our teachers find it helps with remembering. On Handwriting Day we are curious: when did you last write a full page by hand? Share your habit, and tell us which tool you use for notes.

Handwritten card ideas

Planning a gift? A handwritten card makes it personal. Here are our favourite ideas for what to write: a shared memory, a wish for the year ahead, a thank-you for something small, or a short joke only you two understand. Save this pin for the next birthday. We can add a handwritten note to your order: tell us your message when you place it.

Meme and trend formats that fit

  • Expectation vs reality. On one side, neat calligraphy from a pretty pinboard; on the other, a real doctor-style scribble from your own notebook. Self-irony works: laugh at your team’s handwriting, not at customers.
  • Before and after. A first attempt at a calligraphy letter next to a practised result after a few weeks. It invites followers to share their own progress.

What to avoid

  • Do not mock anyone’s handwriting; dyslexia, injuries and age can change how people write
  • Do not claim that handwriting makes people smarter or earn more without a reliable source; keep the benefits general
  • Do not treat the day as a US-only occasion for non-US audiences; make it about personal notes, which everyone understands

When to post

  • Order or prepare the cards and pens a week ahead; 23 January 2027 is a Saturday, so plan for the weekend
  • Publish in the morning and keep the user-photo challenge open for 24 hours
  • On Sunday, share the best handwriting photos and thank everyone who took part

What to check afterwards

  • Number of user photos or replies to the handwriting challenge
  • Saves of the tutorial and the card-ideas content
  • Orders that included a handwritten note and any customer comments about them
