What it is
Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a US federal holiday observed on the third Monday of January, close to his birthday. It honours Dr. King, a leader of the American civil rights movement, and has become a day associated with service and community.
Many organisations treat it as a day of volunteering rather than shopping. For businesses, the right approach is to be quiet, sincere and useful, and to leave the hard selling for another day.

What to avoid
- Do not use the day for sales, countdown banners or discount codes: it is a day of remembrance and service, and promotion would feel disrespectful
- Do not quote Dr. King out of context to sell a product, and check any quote against a reliable source before posting
- Do not post if you have no genuine connection to the topic; silence is better than a generic, hollow tribute
When to post
- Choose your service activity or reading list a few weeks ahead; in 2027 the holiday is Monday 18 January
- Publish the tribute or the volunteering photos in the morning, and keep any holiday-hours notice separate and short
- The day after, thank the organisation you helped and share what you learned, without any call to buy
