What it is
Hug Day is an informal holiday on 21 January, usually linked to the American National Hugging Day, which was started in the 1980s to encourage people to show affection openly. Over time it spread online and is now marked in many countries.
It is not an official holiday, which is part of its charm: brands can join with warm, simple content, user photos and small gestures without any pressure.
Symbols: Open arms, a cosy blanket, a plush toy, a warm scarf, two mugs side by side
Emoji: 🤗 💛 🧸 ☕ 🫶 🧣

Today is Hug Day, and we believe a good hug is part of self-care. Take a minute for a warm bath, a soft robe and a face mask, and hug someone you love when you are done. Tell us in the comments who you would hug right now. We will pick one comment and prepare a small care set for you and your favourite person.
Happy Hug Day! Ask your child today what a hug feels like and write the answer in the comments: kids often find the most unexpected words. We would love to see your family hugs too! Share a photo and tell us how you hug at home. With your permission, we will include the most heartwarming pictures in our next gallery post.
Can’t hug someone in person today? Send a gift that does it for you. We put together a small set of cosy things: soft blankets, warm socks, scented candles and sweet little notes. Open the catalogue and tell us who it is for, and we will help choose something that fits them. A warm gesture is always welcome.
Meme and trend formats that fit
- Expectation vs reality. Show what a polite hug looks like in theory and the real, awkward group hug your team gives. Keep it affectionate and about the situation, not about anyone’s personality.
- Two-panel choice. Describe a two-choice layout with your own drawing: on top the usual Monday plan, below a hug-and-tea plan, and the character picks the second one. Use your own illustration rather than a known template.
What to avoid
- Do not post pictures of strangers or children hugging without clear permission
- Remember that some people do not like physical contact or are far from loved ones, so keep the tone warm, not insistent
- Do not make the day all about a sale: a small gift idea fits, a loud promotion does not
When to post
- Prepare the post and the repost schedule a few days before; 21 January 2027 is a Thursday
- Publish mid-morning, then repost followers’ photos through the day
- The day after, thank everyone who shared and collect the best photos in one post
What to check afterwards
- Number of tagged friends and user photos, the core of this day
- Shares and saves of the carousel or gift list
- Messages and orders after the gift list, if you published one
