What it is
The Day of Slavic Literature and Culture is observed on 24 May in Russia and in several other Slavic countries, with local variations. It honours Saints Cyril and Methodius, the brothers who are traditionally credited with creating the first Slavic alphabet, and it is also a day of school, books and the written word.
In Russia the day is usually marked with events at libraries, schools and cultural centres. For businesses it is a gentle, educational occasion: language courses, bookshops, children’s centres and publishers can talk about letters, reading and learning.

Today is the Day of Slavic Literature and Culture, and we have a small challenge. We will publish five words that people often write with mistakes, and you choose the correct spelling in the Stories quiz. Those who get five out of five can write “I did it” in the comments. Save the post and share it with a friend who loves grammar.
On the Day of Slavic Literature and Culture we invite children to a short workshop: we draw letters with colourful pens, build words from cards and listen to a story about the alphabet. Parents are welcome to join. Places are limited, so write to us to reserve. Tell us in the comments the first word your child learned to read.
To mark the Day of Slavic Literature and Culture, we collected three books that our team likes to give: a classic, a modern novel and a book for children. In the catalogue you will find all three. Open it from the menu button and tell us what you usually read, and we will recommend a fourth one that suits your taste.
Meme and trend formats that fit
- Spell check. A light format with a spelling mistake everybody makes and the right answer revealed in the next cut. Keep it friendly and never mock a person for mistakes.
- Expectation vs reality. Two panels: the long classic you plan to read in May and the book you actually opened. Self-ironic and affectionate.
What to avoid
- Do not give dates, names or facts about the alphabet that you have not checked; keep to well-known information
- Do not mock people for spelling mistakes or for any accent; the day is about love for the language
- Do not mix the day with political topics; keep it cultural and educational
When to post
- Prepare the quiz and the reading list a week ahead and have them checked by someone who knows the language well
- Publish in the morning of 24 May and put the quiz in Stories
- The day after, share the answers and the most active readers’ comments
What to check afterwards
- Quiz answers and comments
- Saves of the carousel with letters and spelling traps
- Bookings of lessons or sales of the books you featured
