What it is
Memorial Day is a US federal holiday held on the last Monday of May to honour service members who died in military service. It is usually traced to the years after the American Civil War, when communities began to decorate graves, and it was originally called Decoration Day.
In everyday life the long weekend has also become the unofficial start of summer, and many shops hold sales. Brands that take part need to lead with respect and keep promotion secondary.
Symbols: The American flag, red poppies, flags placed at cemeteries, a moment of silence, parades
Emoji: 🇺🇸 🌺 🕊️ 🎗️ 🙏 🌅
Colours: Navy blue, white, muted red
Hashtags: #MemorialDay #Remember #HonorAndRemember #MemorialDayWeekend #NeverForget
What to aim for
- Show respect to your community and to the families who observe the day
- Keep customers informed about holiday hours and long-weekend service
- For shops: run a restrained long-weekend offer only after a sincere tribute
Post ideas by format
Post
- A simple, respectful message of remembrance with no product in the picture
- A holiday-hours notice posted separately and later in the day
Carousel
- “Long weekend: what is open and when”: one slide per location or service
- A calm gallery of local places where the community remembers, with a short caption
Reel / short video
- A quiet, slow video of a flag in the wind with a short thank-you line, no trending audio
- A team message: “We are closed Monday and open again Tuesday,” kept plain and short
Stories
- A single still image with a thank-you line and no stickers or polls
- A holiday-hours story posted a few hours after the tribute

Today we remember the men and women who gave their lives in military service, and we thank their families. Our team will be closed on Monday to spend the day with our own families. We will reopen on Tuesday at the usual hours. Wishing everyone in our community a peaceful and thoughtful Memorial Day weekend.
Our thoughts are with the families who remember loved ones this Memorial Day. A practical note for the long weekend: orders placed over the weekend will be packed when our team returns on Tuesday. If you need help choosing something for a summer gathering, send us a message, and we will reply as soon as we are back.
We will be closed on Memorial Day to give our team time to remember and to be with family. A quiet thank-you to everyone who served and to the families who carry that memory. We will be back on Tuesday morning, and the coffee will be ready. Take care this long weekend, wherever you spend it.
What to avoid
- Do not wish people a “happy” Memorial Day in a party tone; this is a day of remembrance, so use phrases like “remembering” and “thinking of the families”
- Do not put a sale banner, a countdown or a promo code in the same post as the tribute; post offers separately and later, if at all
- Do not use memes, trending sounds, jokes or military imagery as decoration
When to post
- Prepare the tribute and the hours notice a week ahead and have them approved by a manager
- Publish the tribute in the morning of the holiday; if you run an offer, post it separately in the afternoon or before the weekend
- The day after, return to normal content and thank customers for their patience over the long weekend
What to check afterwards
- Replies and shares of the tribute, treated as a sign of respect rather than a performance metric
- Questions about holiday hours: if they are many, your hours information was not clear enough
- For shops: weekend orders compared with other long weekends
