What it is
Russian Language Day is observed on 6 June. The date is the birthday of the poet Alexander Pushkin, born in 1799, and the United Nations has marked the day as Russian Language Day within its programme of language days. In Russia it is a holiday with many cultural events.
For schools, language centres, bookshops and online courses it is a natural occasion for quizzes, spelling challenges and quotes, and it connects with audiences in Russia and with Russian speakers abroad.

Happy Russian Language Day! Let us start with a quick test: which is right, “звонит” or “звОнит”? The stress falls on the second syllable. Try the quiz in our Stories and see how many you get right. If you want to practise with a teacher, write to us, and we will suggest a lesson that fits your level.
On Russian Language Day we have put Pushkin’s books at the front of the shop: poems, tales and letters. If you are not sure where to start, our staff recommend a collection of short poems and a prose volume for a long evening. Tell us in the comments which Pushkin line you remember from school.
To mark Russian Language Day, our teacher explains five frequent mistakes in Russian: stress, endings, hyphenation, particles and word choice. Each takes under a minute with a clear rule and an example. Watch to the end for a short exercise, and write your answers in the comments. We will check them and reply.
Meme and trend formats that fit
- Expectation vs reality. Left: someone who plans to write a perfect message. Right: the same person checking a rule in a dictionary. Keep it self-ironic and avoid mocking people for their mistakes.
- Which spelling is correct?. A generic two-option quiz with a tricky word. It works as a story sticker or a Reel and always ends with the correct form and the rule.
What to avoid
- Do not publish unverified quotes: check every Pushkin quotation against a reliable edition
- Do not mock people who make mistakes; the tone of the day should be friendly and educational
- Avoid political commentary about language; keep the content about learning and culture
When to post
- Prepare the quiz and quotes a week ahead and have a teacher check the answers
- Publish on the morning of 6 June, with a quiz in Stories at lunchtime
- The day after, publish the answers and the most interesting comments
What to check afterwards
- Quiz participation and correct answers, which show how engaged your audience is
- Saves of the carousel with rules, a sign of practical value
- Enquiries about courses or lessons from the post
