What it is

World Oceans Day is observed on 8 June. It is usually linked to a proposal made in the early 1990s and was officially recognised by the United Nations in 2008. The day draws attention to the role of the ocean in climate, food and everyday life, and to the need to protect it.

Travel companies, children’s brands, shops and cafes use it to share ocean-friendly choices, to teach children about marine life and to support marine charities in a transparent way.

Travel kindly to the coast

Today is World Oceans Day, and we have a few simple rules for coastal trips: take your waste with you, choose reef-safe sunscreen, keep a respectful distance from wildlife and never remove shells and stones. Small habits keep the coast beautiful. Save this list for your next holiday and tell us your favourite sea in the comments.

Sea quiz for kids

Happy World Oceans Day! We prepared a short quiz for our little explorers: how many hearts does an octopus have, what do turtles eat, and where does the biggest animal live? Parents, read the questions aloud and let children guess. The answers are in the next message. Send us a photo of your child’s ocean drawing, and we will share a few.

Less plastic, healthier sea

For World Oceans Day we are sharing the changes we have made in our cafe: no plastic straws, refills for your own cup and a smaller range of single-use items. It is a small step, and we plan more. Do you have an idea for reducing waste in a cafe? Tell us in the comments, and we will read every suggestion.

Meme and trend formats that fit

  • Expectation vs reality. Left: a pristine beach from a postcard. Right: the same beach after a clean-up crew arrives, with the bag of litter shown honestly. Use it to invite people to join a clean-up.
  • Which sea animal are you?. A light, generic personality-quiz format with friendly marine animals. It works well as a story and gives you a soft way to bring up ocean facts.

What to avoid

  • Do not use vague eco-claims or “100% ocean-safe” labels without evidence
  • Do not use shocking photos of animals harmed by plastic as decoration for sales
  • Do not promise a donation unless you can state who receives it and how much; transparency matters more than the amount

When to post

  • Choose one real action and prepare quiz facts a couple of weeks ahead
  • Publish on the morning of 8 June, and run the quiz in Stories in the afternoon
  • The day after, report honestly on what you did and thank the people who joined

What to check afterwards

  • Participation in the action, such as clean-up sign-ups or reused cups
  • Saves and shares of the carousel or the checklist
  • Quiz answers and comments from children or parents
