What it is
Defender of the Fatherland Day is a public holiday in Kazakhstan observed on 7 May. It honours the country's armed forces and is usually linked to the creation of the national army in the early 1990s, after independence.
In everyday life the day is also treated by many people as a day to congratulate men: fathers, brothers, colleagues and friends. For businesses it is a respectful occasion for greetings and a practical gift guide, with a calm tone and no jokes about military service.
