What it is
1 May is International Workers' Day in many countries and, in Russia, the Spring and Labour Day. It is usually traced to the 19th-century labour movement and its demands for a shorter working day; in the Soviet era it was marked with large demonstrations, and today it is mostly a day off and the start of the May holidays.
For businesses it is the first long break of the spring: people travel, go to the countryside, grill outdoors and look for ideas for free days. It is a good day for practical, cheerful content rather than long speeches.
