What it is
International Jazz Day is observed on 30 April and was proclaimed by UNESCO in 2011. It celebrates jazz as a music of freedom, creativity and dialogue between cultures, and each year concerts and events take place around the world.
For cafés, bars, music schools and venues it is an easy, atmospheric day: a playlist, a live set, a themed menu or a short lesson about the history of the music.

To mark International Jazz Day we are hosting a quiet evening of live jazz. A trio will play from seven, we will serve warm drinks and something sweet, and the lights will be low. Tables are limited, so send us a message to reserve one. Tell us in the comments which jazz track you would add to our evening playlist.
For International Jazz Day our teacher explains improvisation in plain words: you learn a theme, listen to your partners and then play your own idea on top. In this short video he demonstrates it on the piano and shows how beginners can try it. If you enjoy it, tell us in the comments which instrument you would like to learn.
Happy International Jazz Day! We asked our music teachers for a short list of albums for people who have never listened to jazz. Each one is easy to follow and shows a different side of the music. Save the list for a quiet evening. Write in the comments what you are going to listen to first, and we will add your picks.
Meme and trend formats that fit
- Expectation vs reality. Two panels: the smooth jazz musician you imagine yourself to be and the real attempt at the keyboard. Make it affectionate towards musicians and beginners.
- Jazz or not jazz. A quiz-style image: a casual everyday sound or situation labelled “is it jazz?”, with a funny answer. Keep it light and friendly towards the music.
What to avoid
- Do not use recordings you do not have rights to in your videos; use licensed or original music
- Do not claim an artist is performing if they are not; confirm every musician before announcing
- Avoid snobbery about jazz knowledge; welcome beginners and listeners of every level
When to post
- Confirm the musicians and the licensing of the music a week ahead
- Announce the evening early and post a reminder on the morning of 30 April (a Friday in 2027)
- The next day, share a few photos and thank the musicians and guests
What to check afterwards
- Table reservations and actual attendance
- Saves of the playlist or album list
- Comments and shares of the announcement, and whether guests returned later
