What it is
World Food Day is observed on 16 October, the anniversary of the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in 1945. It draws attention to food security, hunger and sustainable food systems.
In Russia the same date is also widely marked as World Bread Day. For cafés and bakeries it is a day to talk about reducing food waste, about sharing food and about the craft of bread.

It is World Food Day, and for us it starts with a simple loaf. Our bakers mix the dough the evening before and bake before sunrise. We plan the batches carefully so that less goes unsold, and we are working on sharing what remains. Come and see how the bread is made, or ask us anything in the comments. What does a good loaf mean to you?
On World Food Day we want to be honest about food waste. We plan daily orders by day of the week, store prepared food carefully and use surplus vegetables in soups and staff meals. It is not perfect, but we keep improving. If you have an idea for what else we could do, write to us here. We read every message and will share what we try.
Today is World Food Day. We have agreed with a local food charity to donate surplus meals prepared in our kitchen, and we will report here how it goes. If your organisation is looking for partners in the area, send us a message and we will talk. We believe good food should reach as many people as possible, and we are learning how to do it properly.
What to avoid
- Do not use jokes about hunger or poverty; the day is about food security, and the tone should be respectful
- Do not claim donations, zero waste or partnerships you have not actually arranged; say exactly what you do
- Do not turn the day into a big food discount; if you give surplus food away, do it quietly and report the result
When to post
- Agree on the charity or practice a week ahead and make sure it is real
- Publish on 16 October in the morning; in 2026 it falls on a Friday
- A few days later, report back honestly on what was shared or changed
What to check afterwards
- Comments and shares of the food-waste post, as a sign of trust
- Questions or offers from local organisations that want to cooperate
- Visits to your venue after the bread-making content
