What it is
Armistice Day on 11 November marks the end of fighting in the First World War, which took effect at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918. In the United Kingdom it is remembered with a two-minute silence at 11 a.m., and the red poppy is a widely worn symbol.
It is a day of remembrance, not a commercial occasion. For businesses the right approach is a quiet message, a pause in promotions and clear opening hours.
Symbols: The red poppy, a moment of silence at 11 a.m., war memorials, a wreath
Emoji: 🌺 🕊️ 🕯️ 🇬🇧 🙏
Colours: Poppy red, black, soft white
Hashtags: #ArmisticeDay #LestWeForget #TwoMinuteSilence #PoppyAppeal #Remembrance
What to aim for
- Show respect for the day and for the people in your community (trust)
- Tell customers when you will be closed or paused, with no promotion (service)
- Support a poppy appeal in a quiet, non-commercial way, if it fits your team
Post ideas by format
Post
- A simple poppy visual with the words “We will remember”, with no logo banner and no offers
- A short practical post that says the shop or café pauses at 11 a.m. for the two-minute silence
Carousel
- A two-slide post: a poppy and one respectful sentence, then the opening hours for the day
- A quiet photo set from a local act of remembrance your team attended, with permission from the people shown
Reel / short video
- Usually not recommended; if you post a video, keep it very short and calm, with no trending sound
- A still image with a poppy and a short message instead of motion
Stories
- A single story with a poppy and “11 a.m.: two minutes of silence”, with no stickers
- A plain information story about changed opening hours

At 11 a.m. today we will pause our service for two minutes of silence to remember those who died in war. Please join us if you are in the café, or at home or at work. We have paused promotions for the day and will serve as usual straight afterwards. Thank you for understanding.
Today is Armistice Day. Our team will observe the two-minute silence at 11 a.m. and we will answer messages a little later than usual. We are thinking of those who lost their lives in the First World War and in later conflicts, and of the families who remember them.
Our bookshop will be quiet from 11 a.m. today for the two-minute silence. Doors stay open for anyone who wishes to join us. We have paused our usual posts and promotions, and we will be back with normal news tomorrow. Thank you for your understanding.
What to avoid
- Do not post offers, discounts, giveaways or sales on this day, and pause scheduled promotions in advance
- Do not use jokes, memes, playful stickers or trending sounds; keep the visuals plain and the language sincere
- Do not use the poppy as a product decoration, and do not claim any donations unless you are really making them and can say so accurately
When to post
- A week ahead, check your content calendar and remove anything promotional scheduled for 11 November
- Publish one quiet message in the morning and do not post during the two-minute silence at 11 a.m.
- The day after, return gently to normal content without a loud announcement
What to check afterwards
- Do not track numbers as a goal; read comments and reply respectfully where needed
- Check whether customers asked about opening hours, and publish the information earlier next time
- Confirm that no promotional post went out by mistake
