What it is
The Day of Remembrance and Sorrow is observed in Russia on 22 June. It marks the day in 1941 when Germany invaded the Soviet Union and the Great Patriotic War began for the country. It is usually linked to a decision of the 1990s that set a day for remembering the victims of the war.
It is a day of mourning and memory, observed with moments of silence, flowers at memorials and quiet remembrance. It is not a day for promotion.
