What it is
Juneteenth, observed on 19 June, commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. The date is linked to 19 June 1865, when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, were informed that they were free. It has been celebrated by Black communities for generations and became a US federal holiday in 2021.
It is a day of remembrance, celebration and education, so brands should approach it with care, listen to the community and avoid using it as a promotional slogan.

Today is Juneteenth, the day that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. We have put together a table of books about the history, culture and voices of Black communities: memoirs, history and fiction, many by Black authors. Come in to browse, or message us for a reading suggestion. We will be closed today in observance.
Our team will be off on Juneteenth, a day of remembrance and celebration of freedom. We encourage colleagues to use the time to learn, to attend a local event or to be with their families. We are also reviewing how our company works with Black-owned suppliers, and we plan to share what we learn. Our offices reopen on the next working day.
We will be closed on Juneteenth so that our team can observe the day with their families and communities. We encourage our guests to take time to learn about the history of the holiday and to support local Black-owned businesses in our area. We will be back to normal hours the next day. Thank you for understanding and for being part of our community.
What to avoid
- Do not use Juneteenth to promote a sale, a discount or a themed product; this is a commemoration, not a marketing moment
- Do not post generic or borrowed content without sources; check every historical statement and credit the original authors
- Do not show support only for one day: if you mention Black-owned partners, make sure the relationship is real and lasting
When to post
- Start preparing at least a month ahead and, if possible, ask a person from the community to review your message
- Publish in the morning of 19 June with calm, respectful content; avoid more than one or two posts
- The day after, return to normal content and continue to support the partners you mentioned
What to check afterwards
- Qualitative feedback: comments and messages, especially from the community, rather than reach figures
- Saves and shares of educational content, as a sign it was useful
- Any long-term action that came out of the day, such as new partnerships or purchases from Black-owned suppliers
