What it is
Pancake Day, or Shrove Tuesday, falls on the day before Ash Wednesday, which starts Lent for many Western Christians. Traditionally households used up rich foods such as eggs, milk and sugar before the fast, and pancakes were an easy way to do it. The date moves each year with Easter; in 2027 it is 9 February.
In the UK it is a cheerful, food-led day: families make pancakes, flip them in the pan and argue about the best toppings. Some towns also hold pancake races, which makes it a good source of playful content.
