What it is
The International Day of Older Persons is observed on 1 October. It was established by the United Nations to draw attention to the contribution of older people and to issues of ageing, dignity and inclusion. In Russia the day is also marked as the Day of Older Persons.
For businesses it is a day to show respect and to make services more accessible, not to talk about age in a patronising way.

On the International Day of Older Persons we want to thank our older patients and their families for their trust. Our team takes time to explain, answer questions and repeat when needed. We are happy to arrange a longer appointment on request. If you would like to ask about a visit for your parents, write to us here and we will help you choose a convenient time.
To mark the International Day of Older Persons we invite our neighbours to a free gentle movement class: slow pace, chairs available, a warm cup of tea after. No experience needed, and you may bring a friend or a grandchild. Please check with your doctor if you have health concerns. Write in the comments if you would like us to hold such classes regularly.
Some of our regulars have been visiting for many years, and we remember their stories and their favourite orders. On the International Day of Older Persons we say thank you for trust and for the time you share with us. If you have a memory about our place, send it to us here. With your permission, we will gather a few of them in a special post.
What to avoid
- Do not use jokes, memes or stereotypes about age, memory or technology; the day is about dignity
- Do not use photos or stories of older clients without clear consent from them or their families
- Do not promise health outcomes or make a “senior discount” a patronising headline; state the terms plainly if you offer one
When to post
- Prepare a week ahead, especially any real offer such as a class or a quiet hour
- Publish in the morning of 1 October in a calm, warm tone
- The day after, thank participants and answer questions about future classes or accessibility
What to check afterwards
- Enquiries from older clients and their relatives
- Comments and shared memories, a sign the tone was right
- Attendance at the class or visits for the day’s offer
